3.EPHESUS
Let's move on to the next amazing place in Turkey -- Ephesus. This city has a lot of mysterious histories. I am so proud to share with you guys what I've discovered about the ancient city of Ephesus. For your information, Ephesus was one of the most popular cities of the ancient Mediterranean. It is founded in the Bronze Age and important from ancient Greek times. This city has the well-known Temple of Artemis, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It served as a crossroads between the East and West for centuries.
Well, let me tell you guys a little bit about The Temple of Artemis. It is also known as Temple of Diana and it is used as a house of worship and a marketplace. It was fired and destroyed by the supporters of oligarchy in 356BC. Yet, it is believed that there came one mad or crazy guys named Herostratus had put the temple on fire in order to make his name immortal on the same night in Macedonia Alexander the Great was born. On that time, the temple can't be used at all and Alexander the Great had come out with the idea of repairing the temple back to its normal condition and make it usable as before. Unluckily, the Ephesians finely do not support the suggestion and say that "A God can not built a temple for another God." On that time being, Alexander that was very proud and arrogant about himself due to the reason that he thinks he is the God and he had gave some privileged to the city. Later, an Ephesian architect, Dinocrates repaired the Temple of Artemis.
Soon after the death of Alexander the Great, Ephesus was ruled by the general of him, Lysimakhos, in 287 BC. Lysimakhos then made a decision to change the prior location of Ephesus to further west. It is because due to the destruction of the port by the alluviums, and the inhabitants were forced to settle in the new place called "Arsinoeina" which is named based on Lysimakhos' wife. Furthermore, the city was surrounded by wide stone walls in 10 meters height and 9 meters length. Thus, "Arsinoeina" then was changed back to "Ephesus".
The fascinating structure in Ephesus ancient city. This Great Theater is located on the slope of Panayir Hill which is opposite the Harbor Street. It can be seen easily when you enter from the sounth entrance to Ephesus. Moreover, it was first constructed in the Hellenistic Period, in the third century BC during the reign of Lysimahoks. Yet, during the Roman Period, it was been enlarged formed its current style that we could see today.
This a video about how Ephesus does look like and where it is actually located. This video will tell you more details about Ephesus plus will give you a clear view about this city.
